Greetings from our President
As the old saying goes, “June is busting out all over”. Although not officially Summer, Mother Nature has done her usual magic, giving us a beautiful display of flowers and trees, not to mention lawns that seem to need mowing every other day and a never-ending crop of every weed imaginable, particularly an incredible dandelion show this year!
I will take a few minutes to revisit the subject of the changes to our luncheon payment procedure which began last month. Understandably, some folks continue to have questions and mostly concern that the Center receives financial assistance for the meals it provides. While the system continues to be “fine-tuned” and the Center calculates its cost to provide the meals, we are confident the Center will be adequately compensated.
To reiterate, sometime in June, you may receive a note from the Council on Aging indicating the number of meals you hopefully enjoyed the previous month, and giving you the opportunity to make a voluntary donation of any amount that will be dedicated toward supporting the nutrition program it sponsors and the Center provides. If you chose to donate, you may do so by mailing the donation to the COA, or by placing your donation in the black COA box on the wall directly across from the Welcome Desk. Any funds placed in it, go to the COA, not the Center.
Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions to the Welcome Desk volunteers or yours truly.
Moving on, within the next week, thanks to a generous grant from the Rapp Foundation, the Center will take delivery of two new freezers and a new refrigerator to replace old and not properly functioning units. Shauna and Jon are thrilled to have these new toys. THANKS RAPP FOUNDATION!
Just in time to recognize Memorial Day, we proudly replaced our faithful existing and somewhat tattered flag of many years with a beautiful, bright new flag. Our old flag will be respectfully laid to rest.
While summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors in the wonderful place where we are so privileged to live, looking forward to the colder months that will come all too soon, I and my Board helpers continually give thought to what other additional activities we might be able to provide to enhance the social part of our special place. We welcome and encourage your ideas and suggestions for new and stimulating activities; perhaps a book club, or art or craft instruction or some other physical activity. Obviously, some ideas may not be feasible due to practicality or instructor availability. However, if you have a thought or idea, please share it by placing your thoughts in the suggestion box or see me.
Some dates to note in June include:
D-Day on Saturday, June 6th;
My 60th wedding anniversary on June 11;
Flag Day, June 14th;
Fathers’ Day (also the first day of Summer) on June 21st.
Please also note that on Monday, June 22nd, Gene is hosting a contest for the man wearing the most fun or outrageous hat. Come on men, let’s celebrate this day by showing we can still be little kids! There will be a prize!
Some closing thoughts:
“Nothing is impossible, The word itself says “I’m possible!”
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”
“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”
“Enjoy each wonderful day, rain or shine. “
