Helpful Tips

Give Wisely, Give Safely

Many of us enjoy supporting charities and causes that are important to us. Unfortunately, scammers know this too—and they may use emergencies, holidays, or emotional stories to pressure people into donating.

Before you give, keep these tips in mind:

•Don't feel pressured to act immediately. A legitimate charity should allow you time to make your decision.

•Verify who is asking. Be cautious with unexpected phone calls, emails, texts, or social-media messages requesting donations.

•Watch for look-alike organizations. Scammers may use names or logos that resemble well-known charities.

•Never share sensitive information. Don't provide your Social Security number, passwords, or banking login information to someone requesting a donation.

•Be cautious about payment methods. Requests for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or cash are red flags.

•Go directly to the charity's website. Rather than clicking a link in an unexpected message, find the organization's website yourself and donate through its official site.

•Remember: Stop, Check, Then Give
